Shades of Noir:

Shades of Noir provokes, challenges, and encourages dialogue on the subjects of race and diversity within higher education, the creative and cultural sectors.

I think the Shades of Noir resource will continue to positively inform my teaching practice after the PGCert is completed. As part of my role of grade 4 technician I am expected ‘To contribute to planning, development and delivery of learning activities supporting student learning & research.’ (UAL job description Grade 4.)

What I have learnt in the race sessions of the Inclusive Practices unit has encouraged me to reflect on how I will plan, develop, and deliver learning activities in the future. I have spent a lot of time thinking about, and discussing with friends and family, the issues raised in the Inclusive Practices unit particularly issues of critical race theory, white privilege and the Freirean concept of education not being a neutral space.

I will be directing my students to the Shades of Noir on-line resource and will encourage them to look at the amazing artefact resource for inspiration and consider approaching Shades of Noir with their own design work to potentially be included in the digitised artefact platform.

The most profound reflection for me has been around acknowledging my own privilege and power as a staff member at UAL, and how I can begin to transform how I interact with my students, the language I use and the references and teaching aids I teach with.
